Nashville Flooding  -  Why Flood Insurance for Modular and Mobile Homes Is Important

At HomeFirst, we helped over 100 customers who had their homes destroyed or damaged by the Nashville flooding in 2010.
Is your home insured in case of flooding?

On May 1-2, 2010, rainfall exceeded 17 inches which was the highest amount in more than 140 years of Nashville's (Davidson County, TN) recorded history. Thirteen inches of rain fell in less than 36 hours. The weather system that spawned this excessive rainfall created one in 1,000-year floods in middle Tennessee, west Tennessee, south-central and western Kentucky and northern Mississippi. At least 30 counties in Tennessee were declared major disaster areas by the federal government.

At the time of the flood, a Tennessee newspaper reported that less than 4,000 homes in Davidson County, Tenn. were covered by flood insurance, meaning that the majority of homeowners with damaged or destroyed homes would not be compensated for their losses.

HomeFirst covered destroyed or damaged homes

The historic flooding of Nashville, TN is just one example why HomeFirst Agency includes coverage for flood damage in all of its homeowner insurance policies. HomeFirst Agency provides flood insurance as part of our comprehensive coverage for manufactured home, mobile home, modular home and other factory-built housing.

Twenty-nine of HomeFirst Agency's customers' homes were destroyed by the Nashville flooding and were paid $984,000 in total. Another 82 customers suffered partial flood damage and were paid a cumulative $280,000 for their losses. With many other insurance policies, these customers would have been paid nothing.

Anywhere it rains, it can flood

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, states on its flood page that "Even if you feel you live in a community with a low risk of flooding, remember that anywhere it rains, it can flood. Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future". To learn more about the risk of a potential flood in your area and how this might affect you, please visit the flood page of the Federal Emergency Management Agency at http://www.ready.gov/floods.
